Implement new product categories

To implement the new product categories you need to follow these steps. You will have to do 3 steps to get the product categories fully working:

  1. Copy product categories from master website
  2. Update product categories to match your SSD
  3. Assign categories to products

To get an insight of the terminology used in this manual, please see the products overview manual.

1. Copy product categories from master website

In the master website a set of product categories is predefined. You can find them by going to Products > Products Categories in the sidebar of the master website. You will see a list of 20 items, 5 main categories and a few sub categories for each main category.

To copy the categories to you local SSD, select all the categories by selecting the checkbox above the list from the Bulk actions choose Copy selected products to COUNTRY. If not all categories are fitted fr your SSD, it is best to still copy all categories. You can later remove categories you don’t need in you local SSD.

After starting the copy process head over to your own SSD. It van take up to 5 minutes before all categories are visible. You can find the categories under Products > Product categories.

2. Update product categories to match your SSD

First make sure you’ve moved to your own SSD site. Then you can start updating the categories. You can do the following:

Remove unneeded categories

When your country doesn’t have specific product you can remove the matching category from your SSD. To do this, hover over the category and click delete. Be careful: once deleted, a category can only be restored by copying it from the master website again.

Update main categories

First update the main categories, they need different information then the sub categories. A main category is a category that has no — sign in front of the name.

  1. Translate the Name field.
  2. Translate the slug field. You can copy paste the translated name in the field, it will automatically be converted to a slug with dashes.
  3. Under Product Category Information
    1. Banner image is already preselected
    2. Product image can stay empty
    3. The checkbox is only needed for sub categories
    4. Translate the Short description
    5. Select the matching activity is not in use.
    6. Under Select ‘Call to action’ post, select a post from your site. This could be a news item with the same topic as the product category, or a related activity.
  4. The call to action can be updated, just as it can on other pages using the Override the global Call to action setting switch.

Update sub categories

When you’re done updating the main categories you can translate the sub categories. A sub category is a category that has a — sign in front of the name.

  1. Translate the Name field.
  2. Translate the slug field. You can copy paste the translated name in the field, it will automatically be converted to a slug with dashes.
  3. Make sure the correct Parent Product category is selected
  4. Under Product Category Information
    1. Banner image can stay empty
    2. Product image is already preselected
    3. Set the switch The image should fill the entire image container to Yes if the product image has a coloured background. It will fill the full block.
    4. Short description is not in use for a sub category
    5. Select the matching activity is not in use for a sub category
    6. Select ‘Call to action’ post is not in use for a sub category

For your sub categories, please be aware that you don’t want these slugs to be indexed by Google as these work as anchors on your page and are therefore of no relevance to be indexed. This could even harm your ranking. Follow these steps to exclude the indexation via the Yoast settings per sub product category:

  1. Go in WordPress to Product Categories.
  2. Hover over an existing sub product category, e.g. Fuel infrastructure, and click on “edit”.
  3. Scroll all the way down to the Yoast settings.
  4. Click on Advanced.
  5. “Allow search engines to show this content in search results?” – Set to No.
  6. Click on update.
  7. Repeat this for each sub category.

For more info on how to use Yoast SEO properly, please read this manual.

Assign categories to products

Once all categories are translated you have to assign the product sub categories to products. Head over to Products >  All Products from the sidebar. You can assign categories in 2 ways:

Edit a single product

  1. Hover over a product in the list and click Quick edit.
  2. You see an edit section. In the middle column you will see all categories. Select one or more sub categories for the product. You can also assign main categories, but the sub category will make sure the product is shown in the right section.
  3. click Update.
  4. You can also set the product categories in the right sidebar on the edit screen of a product.
  5. A product can have multiple sub categories. It will be shown in each selected sub category

Bulk edit

  1. Select the checkbox in front of one or more products from the list that need a specific sub category
  2. Click Bulk actions above the products list and choose Edit. Then click the Apply button next to it.
  3. You see an edit section. In the left column all selected products are shown. In the middle column you will see all categories. Select one or more sub categories for the product. You can also assign main categories, but the sub category will make sure the product is shown in the right section.
  4. click Update.

Check your work

Head over to the product categories list again and click View under the name of a main category to see the product category page. You should see the following:

  1. The name of the main category is visible in the list on the left
  2. The selected banner image of the main category is visible
  3. The Name of the main category is visible
  4. The Short description of the main category is visible
  5. All sub categories that are assigned to a product are visible. Each sub category shows:
    1. The product image of the sub category
    2. The name of the sub category
    3. A list of all assigned products
  6. A link to the post that is selected in the main category as call to action post.
  7. The footer call to action and footer.

Troubleshoot

If any of the above information is missing, you could check the following:

The name is not in the list on the left
The sub categories are not visible

This means non of the sub categories are assigned to a sub category of the main category. Make sure you assign products to any of the sub categories.

The call to action post is not visible

This means no call to action post is selected in the main category. Correct this by selecting a post in the main category

The image of a sub category has a lot of white space around it and doesn’t fill the block

You should check if the switch The image should fill the entire image container is set to Yes in the sub category.

The image of a sub category is cut off and not fully visible

You probably have an image with transparent background that is only showing a product. You should check if the switch The image should fill the entire image container is set to No in the sub category.
