Categories
News can be categorized in two different categories: News and Events. You can add a category to a news item in the Categories box in the right side of the edit page, below the Publish button. Select either News or Events as category. Don’t forget to save the changes by Updating the news item.
The category is used as a filter on the News overview page and for layout purposes. An Event wil have a different layout on the News overview then the items in the category News.
Important note
Be aware that news categories must be excluded from indexation on Google. This will harm your SEO ranking. Here is how to exclude your news category pages from being indexed:
- Go in WordPress to
Post Categories. - Hover over an existing sub product category, e.g. Events, and click on “
edit”. - Scroll all the way down to the
Yoast settings. - Click on
Advanced. - “Allow search engines to show this content in search results?” – Set to
No. - Click on
update. - Repeat this for each sub category.
For more info on how to use Yoast SEO properly, please read this manual.
Manually changing the url of a news item
In the news item edit screen you can see a field called Permalink right below the Title field. The permalink is the url of the news item. After you have set the title of the news item, the Permalink is created automatically. If you want to change the permalink, you can do this by clicking the button Edit next to the permalink. You are able the make changes in the section of the permalink that is specific to this news item.
Only change the permalink of a post that is not published yet. When you change the permalink of a published news item, the original permalink stops working and will lead visitors to a 404 not found page.
Edit a news item
When you want to make changes to a published news item, you can go to the news item in the Posts overview or visit the news item in the frontend and click on Edit post in the Topbar. When you’re finished making changes, make sure you click the Update button to save the changes. If you want to see the changes before updating the news item you can also click the Preview changes button in the Publish section. A new window will open showing the news item with your changes.
