Change the navigation menu’s

Publishing a page, activity, product or any other item doesn’t add them in a menu directly. You will have to do this manually. This way you can also have pages that do not appear in any menu.

The navigation menu’s can be updated in the admin by visiting Appearance > Menus.

To change a menu you have to walk through 3 steps:

  1. Select the menu to edit
  2. Add/remove/reposition menu items
  3. Update menu

Select a menu to edit

First you have to select the menu that you want to change. The website has 5 different Menu locations:

  • Global menu (this is the small topbar containing the language switcher)
  • Main menu (this is the most important menu)
  • Company menu in footer (this is the footer menu in the left)
  • Activities menu in footer (this is the footer menu in the right column)
  • Legal menu (this is the menu on the bottom of the page, next to the copyright)

To select a menu find the section Select a menu to edit: on the page. From the dropdown select the menu you want to edit and then click the button Select. Wait for the page to reload before you start changing the menu.

Update menu to save changes

It is good to know that changes are only applied when you Save the menu. So when you are done updating click the Save Menu button on the bottom right of the screen.

Be aware: clicking Delete Menu will delete the entire menu without an option to restore it, so do not click this link

Add menu items

When you have selected a menu you can change the menu itself. There are two sections on the screen that you have to use. On the left you see Add Menu Items. Here you can find all available content that you can add to menus. On the right you see Menu structure, here you can change the structure of the selected menu, move or update a specific item, or remove one.

Add menu items

To add a menu item you can perform actions:

  1. Open the section of the post type you want to add, for instance Pages, by clicking on its name.
  2. Select the page or pages you want to add by checking the checkbox in front of the title.
  3. If you do not see the page in the Most Recent tab in the section, you can open the View all or Search tab. View all shows you alle available items of the specific type. Search gives you the option to search for a specific item.
  4. When you’ve selected one or more items click the button Add to Menu below the list of items.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu in under Menu Structure to see your newly added items.

Missing a post type

When you do not see a post type under Add Menu Items, you have to enable it via Screen Options. You can find the Screen Options on the top right of your screen. Click on Screen Options and check all post types and categories you want to be able to add to menus. When you check an item it appears as an item under Add menu items.

Update or reposition an existing menu item

To update an exiting item find the item under Menu Structure. Click the small triangle on the right of the box to see all available options. You can change the following:

  • Update Navigation label: by default the title of the item is used as Navigation label. You can change it by typing in another name. Please note, once you have changed the label, it will not sync with the original titel anymore. As long as you leave the label untouched, the Navigation label will update whenever the page title is changed.
  • Open link in new tab: you can check the field Open link in new tab when a specific link requires it. It is best practice to only use this for links to external pages.
  • Custom fields will be explained later.

Repositioning an item can simply be done by drag and drop.

  • Long click a menu item and drag the item to another position in the structure. You will see a placeholder box appear where the item will be placed whenever you release the mouse click.
  • When you drag an item to the right it will become a submenu item. You wil see the placeholder box with an indent on the left.
  • Dragging an item with submenu items will also reposition all submenu items.

Removing a menu item

To remove a menu item, click on the small triangle on the right of the menu box. Click on Remove at the bottom
